Çelebi’s Indian foray continues with the award of the cargo handling services contract at Delhi airport

The oldest ground handling services company in the Turkish aviation industry, Çelebi continues to expand into new international markets. After Budapest and Mumbai, Çelebi Ground Handling launched its third major international operation with the award of the cargo handling services contract at Delhi Indira Gandhi International Airport, India’s biggest airport.

Çelebi Ground Handling (ÇGH) has been awarded a contract by Delhi Airport Private Ltd (DIAL), the operator of the Delhi Indira Gandhi International Airport in India’s capital New Delhi, to develop, modernize, and finance the existing cargo terminal and to operate the terminal for a period of twenty-five years.

With this contract award, Çelebi Ground Handling now has the right to provide service at two of India’s biggest and most important airports. After gaining a presence in Mumbai, the heart of the Indian economy, Çelebi has now established itself in the country’s capital city, Delhi.

Cargo traffic to reach 1,000,000 tons a year

Delhi Indira Gandhi International Airport, where Çelebi Ground Handling will begin serving airlines soon, is India’s biggest airport in terms of passenger numbers and the second biggest in terms of cargo traffic. A total of 430,000 tons of cargo were handled at the airport in 2008. Cargo capacity demand and supply have been growing rapidly in India in parallel with the huge growth experienced by the country’s aviation industry in recent years. At Delhi Indira Gandhi International Airport, the rate of growth in cargo traffic has been 10% a year on average since 2001. According to current projections, the total volume of cargo traffic at the airport will reach 1,000,000 tons/year within the next ten years.
